MLC : Effective Healthcare Waste Management 

Introduction: Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) is a process that ensures proper handling and disposal of the health care waste in a safe way. HCWM includes all the steps necessary for waste management from planning to disposal. Waste management is of great importance to reduce the serious health implications. The objective of this course is to spread knowledge among the personnel involved in health care services to prevent transmission of the diseases in the society and to protect public health and environment.

Who is this Course for: This course focuses on healthcare workers, both clinical and supportive like pharmacists, nurses, physicians, frontline workers, housekeeper, social workers working in health facilities or hospitals in providing a detailed understanding of managing healthcare waste in their respective workplace.

This microlearning course on effective healthcare waste management would help learners to get adept knowledge about good healthcare waste management practices and ways to mitigate the risk of biomedical hazards.

  2. Describe the public health and environmental hazards associated with healthcare waste, 
  3. Explain various mechanisms for managing and disposal of healthcare waste,

Healthcare waste management is a challenge in my country-Ethiopia.

Health waste management is a big challenge in my country. Though there are efforts in the country, pharmaceutical waste management and other healthcare waste management is pertinently challenging in the healthcare system. In a hospital set -up, there is need to be screening of waste into groups, thus infectious waste and highly infectious waste. The coding of bins using colour coded to differentiate type of waste. The colours are green, yellow and red, red for very toxic and hazardous waste.Medical waste to include sputum,syringe,needles must be handled with care in sharps container and must be filled to 3/4 and be sealed.
